Economic Activities

Based on latest data, the total labour force, or those between ages 15 to 64, reached some 160,302 persons or 50.8 percent of the City's population. The participation rate was 68.6 percent or 110,000. This figure corresponds to those who were employed (89,000 or 80.9%) and those who were actively searching for employment (21,000 or 19.1%). The jobs were primarily service-related (65.2%). The industry and agricultural employment only accounted for only 29.2 and 5.6 percent of the total employment, respectively. The employment status of City shows that its economy is primarily driven by trade and commerce.

The trend of service-related employment in the City is negated at the regional level. Regional data show that the main occupation groups are production- (i.e. production. and related workers, transport equipment operators and labourers) and agriculture-related (i.e. agriculture, animal husbandry & forestry workers, fishermen and hunters). Only around 13 percent of the employment in Region III accounts for white-collared jobs.

It can likewise be noted that employment rate at the regional level is higher than the City. This may be attributed to the stiffer competition in finding job in the City.

Assuming that the same rate of employment persists in the next ten years, Table 5.4 below shows the employment status of the City up to 2012.
